Keywords & Metadata

Many people don't realize the significance of keywords and "metadata." First of all, the term "metadata," as relates to Websites, is specific tags or lines of code that are not displayed on the Webpage, but give search engines descriptive resources to properly sort in their databases. There are a minimum of three suggested metadata tags for Websites:

  • Title
  • Description
  • Keywords
The title metatag is used to do exactly what it implies: give the Webpage a title. For optimal results, the title tag should specifically describe the product or service, make proper use of 3 or 4 keywords, and is between 10 and 150 characters long.

The keyword metatag gives search engines brief, specific words used for Internet searches. For optimal results, the keyword tag should be between 50 and 250 characters and each word separated by commas.

The description metatag is a brief, 1-sentence statement describing the Webpage's content. It is usually displayed with the Webpage title on search engine results to give the user a "quick glance" at what the page contains.
